National Archives Spirit of Invention Installation
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Each year the National Archives in London put on an exhibition that is open to the Public, relating to the archives held in the building. In 2023 the exhibition was entitled 'Spirit of Invention' and several makers were invited to interpret some of the original patents held at the Archives. I was tasked with creating something called a 'Telekouphonon' which was a very early telephone system that used pipes to relay conversations, rather than wires.
I then created a system that had a central 'exchange' unit where all the interconnecting pipes from the remote stations were able to be connected together by an operator to route calls through, and a selection of 6 outstations that were dotted around the exhibition space. All the stations and central exchange were upcycled from old appliances and pieces of furniture.
Skills involved:
- 3D Design and creation of system to clamp all the piping into place.
- Electrical 'ringing' system to call remote stations and exchange.
- Overall 'System' design and relationship of all parts working together
- Restoration and Repurposing of original items
- Interpretation and realisation of customer brief
The exhibit was then on display for 6 months, where it survived the best the public could throw at it!
